Karmarkar magic from the Konkan coast - studying the great sculptor

My apologies for not turning up more often. Priorities, distractions, excuses, etc...

Recently I treated myself to some wonderful magic on the Arabian Sea coast, namely, at the Sasawane village in Maharashtra's Raigad district (near Alibag). I stayed there for a fortnight, studying the amazing sculptures of the late Vinayak Pandurang Karmarkar (1891 - 1967). He had reached the pinnacle of fame during his career, even though not many will recognize him in the contemporary era. Personally, I think he's right up there with the world's best, of all ages.

I've long admired his work, ever since I came across a little monograph on him, published by the Lalit Kala Acedemi. In case you're interested, I've written more about him here on my website. This page also has captions to the respective images, which I can't use here because of formatting restrictions. So anyway, hereafter I'll only post the studies. My sincere gratitude to the Kamarkar Shilpalay at Sasawane, and its director Mrs. Sunanda Karmarkar for making the studies possible.

Most are sketched on A3 size paper, except some of the acrylics which are on 20x12, or 14x11 (inches) paper. Please click a thumbnail to visit its enlarged version.

Thank you for viewing this page. Having done this series of studies, I feel hugely enriched. Hopefully this will also encourage some interest in one of India's greatest artists

Thank you George and Shashikumar for the kind faves :)

Prasad - you're too kind :) But I have to say this, if one needs to learn, it ought be from the very best. I had that lucky opportunity at Sasawane.
